Undoubtedly, artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the retail industry, bringing about significant changes. One of its key applications is in understanding customer behavior, a strategic insight that can significantly enhance organizational performance. Retailers are leveraging the wealth of customer data they possess to decipher shopping habits and preferences, thereby gaining a competitive edge.

Such consumer data can be fed into AI algorithms to discover patterns and correlations beyond the reach of human eyes. For instance, one algorithm may reveal that customers who purchase cereal on weekdays also buy milk, but cereal bought on weekends is bought together with fruit. Retailers may use such correlations to provide targeted messages and store formats that mirror purchasing behavior.

Moreover, it is possible to apply machine learning algorithms that will help divide customers by their actions. A retailer may come across different groups of customers, including price-sensitive customers, niche customers, impulse buyers, and frequent or regular buyers. Recognizing these types of shopper categories will help retailers better target each category through advertising and merchandise selection. Fashion merchants selling clothes and accessories online are very effective in using Artificial Intelligence to categorize consumers and/or recommend products based on individual propensity.

In addition, artificial intelligence tools are also useful for forecasting future customer traffic in retail stores. How many units of a particular product were sold previously, and given the future market trends such as promotions, holidays, weather, or nearby events, it is possible to predict the future demand for the product. More accurate demand predictions and forecasts are helpful for inventory management and supply chain. As indicated, demand sensing empowered by AI is emerging as critical in retail operations.

However, AI’s strengths in pattern matching and the ability to detect non-conforming behavior means that it can pinpoint abnormal customer behavior that might have been overlooked. This means that identifying the shift in the rate of buying as soon as it happens enables quicker response by the retailers. High or low return rates, variations in purchase patterns, or minimal use of loyalty programs could be potential areas for concern.

Machine learning to predict the constantly shifting consumer behavior pattern is expanding significantly in retail. The skills that AI is going to harness are indeed the available data, and as a result, the more it avails, the more it will deliver customer and market insight. Thus, the retailers who focus on AI to ensure customer satisfaction and create a value-added chain will succeed in the market. The customer behavior patterns that have been revealed by AI algorithms are paving the way for new opportunities for success in the field of retailing.
